A practical buyer’s guide to understanding what is — and is not — included in a fine blanking press quotation, how to compare quotes on equivalent scope, and what hidden costs and red flags to watch for before you sign the purchase order.
A professional fine blanking press quotation should be structured into clearly separated line items: machine base price, optional accessories and upgrades, tooling (if supplied), installation and commissioning, training, spare parts package, and shipping terms. Each line item should specify what is included, what is excluded, and the commercial basis (fixed price, estimate, or customer-provided).
Unfortunately, not all quotations follow this structure. Some suppliers bundle everything into a single “turnkey” price without itemization, making it impossible to compare against a competitor’s itemized quote. Others quote the machine base price prominently and list essential accessories as “optional” even though they are required for the process to work. Understanding the quotation structure is the first step to making an informed purchasing decision.

The machine base price should include the components that make the press functional as a fine blanking machine — not a stripped-down frame that requires additional purchases to operate. Verify that the following are explicitly listed as included:
The welded, stress-relieved frame with machined guideways, ram with hand-scraped guiding assemblies, and platen with T-slots for die clamping. This is the structural foundation — without it, you do not have a press.
Main pump (variable-displacement piston), accumulator for rapid approach, proportional pressure valves for blanking/V-ring/counter-pressure circuits, hydraulic cylinders (main ram, ring gear, ejector), reservoir with level and temperature monitoring, and oil cooler. The hydraulic system is the heart of the press — verify all three force circuits are included.
The CNC controller manages force profiles (V-ring force, counter-pressure, blanking speed), ram position feedback, and safety interlocks. Verify the controller brand and model (e.g., Siemens 840D, Beckhoff), the HMI screen size, and whether process data logging is included or optional.
Safety light curtains (e.g., SICK deTec), die clamping hydraulics, operation and maintenance manuals in English, electrical cabinet with main breaker, and standard tool kit for die change. These should be in the base price — if any are listed as “optional,” ask why.

Hydraulic clamping rails, die lifters, and bolster roller extensions that reduce die changeover from 2–4 hours to 20–40 minutes. For operations running multiple part numbers on one press, the reduced changeover time translates directly to increased production capacity.
Water-cooled or air-cooled heat exchanger that maintains oil temperature within the 35–50°C operating band. Without temperature control, oil viscosity changes during production, affecting press speed and pressure stability — particularly critical in tropical climates or 24/7 operations.
VPN-connected module that transmits cycle data, alarm logs, and pressure trends to the manufacturer for remote diagnostics. When a press stops at 3 AM, remote diagnostics can identify the issue in minutes versus hours of trial-and-error on the shop floor.
Some suppliers include a first article die in the quotation; others quote it separately at $20,000–$80,000 depending on complexity. Clarify whether the first die is included, and if so, whether it covers your specific part or a “demonstration” part.
Who provides the main electrical cable from the factory distribution panel to the press electrical cabinet? Is the main breaker included, or does the customer provide it? Are the motor starter and overload protection included? These items can add $2,000–$5,000 and are often assumed to be customer-provided.
Does the quotation include the foundation drawing (with loading data for the civil engineer), or only the press? Are the anchor bolts, grout, and vibration pads included? A proper press foundation for a 650-ton machine costs $10,000–$30,000 in civil work — this is typically customer scope, but the engineering should be included.
A 650-ton press requires approximately 400–500 liters of ISO VG68 hydraulic oil — a $1,500–$3,000 cost. Is the initial fill of oil included, or does the customer supply it? Some suppliers include it; others list it as “customer-provided consumable.”
Is a recommended spare parts package included in the quotation, or is it a separate quote? A proper initial package (seals, filters, solenoids, contactors) should cost $5,000–$15,000. If the supplier does not offer one, ask for it — you will need these parts within the first two years.

The quotation should specify the Incoterm (International Commercial Term) that defines who bears shipping cost, risk and insurance: FOB (Free On Board) — the seller delivers the press to the departure port; the buyer handles ocean freight, insurance, customs clearance, and inland transport to the factory. CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) — the seller covers ocean freight and insurance to the destination port; the buyer handles customs and inland transport. DAP (Delivered at Place) — the seller delivers to the buyer’s facility, including all transport; the buyer handles unloading and installation. DAP is the most convenient but adds $20,000–$50,000 to the price versus FOB. Understand which term you are being quoted — a $400,000 FOB quote is not comparable to a $430,000 DAP quote.
Standard terms are typically 30% advance with order and 70% before shipment. Some suppliers offer milestone payments: 30% advance, 30% at frame completion, 30% at acceptance test, 10% after installation. Milestone payments reduce the buyer’s risk by tying payments to visible progress, but may extend the supplier’s cash flow requirements, potentially affecting lead time.
Standard warranty is 12–24 months from shipment or commissioning (whichever comes first). Verify: what is covered (components, labor, travel?), what is excluded (consumables, damage from improper operation, third-party components?), and whether the warranty includes on-site service or requires the customer to ship components back. Ask whether warranty service is included in the price or billed separately.
Does the quotation include a performance guarantee — a documented acceptance test verifying that the press achieves rated tonnage, rated speed, and ram parallelism? A reputable supplier should include a factory acceptance test (FAT) before shipment, with the customer or representative present. The acceptance criteria should be defined in the quotation: tonnage verification at 100% rated force, ram parallelism within specified tolerance, hydraulic system leak test, and cycle test at rated SPM.
Compare quotations on the same scope, not just the total price. Create a spreadsheet with line items from each supplier: base machine, feeding system, die protection, quick die change, cooling, remote monitoring, installation, training, spares, shipping, warranty. If one supplier’s total is lower because items are missing, add the missing items’ cost to make the comparison fair. The lowest total may not be the lowest scope-adjusted price.
Be cautious of: quotations with no itemization (single-line “turnkey price”), no specification of hydraulic component brands (unnamed pumps/valves suggest low-grade substitutes), prices 30%+ below market (likely cutting corners on frame, hydraulics, or controls), no acceptance test offered, no warranty terms specified, or pressure to commit quickly. A reputable supplier provides full specifications, welcomes technical questions, and allows time for evaluation.
